New Zealand: Cambridge – All Ages Gather to Sing in New Zealand

We were lucky enough to be invited to a Maori cultural group to mingle with women and children. We learned the craft of making instruments. And then we enjoyed singing along (with song sheets) with everyone from kids to their grandparents. All ages joined together to sing – and the kids knew all the words! People are wonderfully inviting all over the world.

New Zealand: Cambridge – Maori Neighborhood Gathering

Just like all over the world, people of similar backgrounds form social circles to keep their heritage intact. In Cambridge, NZ, we were invited to this Maori gathering to make our own poi balls. The balls are attached to long strings and swung rhythmically, one in each hand. Today, the women dancers perform the Maori poi. Men used it for strength and coordination and they were also used as a weapon during a battle. It is really hard to spin those balls.

New Zealand: Cambridge – Maori Hangi Meal, New Zealand

In the Maori tradition, Hangi, was the preparation of food traditionally wrapped in flax leaves and placed on hot stones at the bottom of a deep pit in the ground. It got it’s name as this earth oven was called a hangi. The food is covered with wet cloth and a mound of earth traps the heat from the stones around the food. The meal is left in the ground for 3-4 hours.

New Zealand: Rotorua – Three Coins in a Water Pool

Younger generations of Maori are still involved in showing off the traditions of the indigenous people. In Whakerewarewa this boy was brave enough to jump into frigid water for coins the visitors threw in.

New Zealand: Cambridge – New Fangled Hangi Meal, New Zealand

Traditionally hangi, as the Maori meal is often called these days, is made with fish, chicken and root vegetables such as kumara (sweet potato). Nowadays, pork, mutton or lamb, potato, pumpkin, cabbage and stuffing may be included. Traditionally it is cooked in a pit in the ground and the result of a 3-4 hour process is tender, off-the-bone meat and delicious vegetables, all infused with a smoky, earthy fragrance. Nowadays, new-fangled ovens produce the meals more easily.

Canada: Sault Ste Marie, Ontario – Group of Seven Food

At the Heritage Discovery Center we were treated to a meal described in the journals of Group of Seven painters who created their art here about a hundred years ago. The first course for us had been an entire meal for them – about ten pounds of onions. Though it doesn’t sound tantalizing, it was scrumptious, as they caramelized the onions and served them with homemade bread and butter.

Canada: Sault Ste Marie, Ontario – Indian Fare at Rasoi

These are North Indian hot (both ways) appetizers served up in an adorable cart. I love it when you eat in a restaurant where you wind up with a collage of ethnic flavors which highlight Canada as a wonderful kaleidoscope of people. The butter chicken poutine says it all – east meets west in Sault Ste. Marie at Rasoi. In Hindi that name means kitchen, and the northern Indian fare here comes straight from home traditions.
