I-95 is more than a concrete parking lot - it’s a pipeline to amusement. There is no reason you have to watch the boob tube or surf the net at night in your room when there are so many live theatrical diversions in so many towns. Those of you who love Broadway and live music or comedy performances can plan to add joy to your trips with a planned - or last minute - evening of theatre, song or comedy. What a treat to look forward to at the end of a long day on the road.

1 - Hair Here

CT Exit 47: Two years after opening their first Shubert Theater in NYC, the Shubert Brothers built the Shubert Theater in New Haven (1914). One of the highlights of the evening had comedian Sam Bernard, one of the greatest stars of the time, singing, “Who Paid the Rent for Mrs. Rip Van Winkle When Rip Van Winkle Was Away?”

One of the first important shows to open here in 1916 was Robinson Crusoe, Jr., starring Al Jolson, who became the greatest musical comedy performer of the day. He was followed through the 20's and 30's by Ethel, John and Lionel Barrymore, Will Rogers, W.C. Fields, George M. Cohan, Sara Bernhardt, Eddie Cantor, The Marx Brothers and Lunt and Fontanne.

In 1943, New Haven audiences went wild over an unlikely musical comedy about cowboys entitled Away We Go but you may know it better as it was named on Broadway - Oklahoma! The show’s composer, Richard Rogers, held the world premiers of Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music here.

Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire, had its premiere at the Shubert in 1947. Not only was a great play born on opening night, but a new star, Marlon Brando, emerged. Other cast members included Jessica Tandy, Karl Malden, and Kim Hunter.

This season, you too can enjoy a piece of this history as the Tony-winning production of Hair will be here Oct 22-24. On Oct 29-30, Brian McKnight and Vivica A. Fox star in Cheaper to Keep Her a romantic comedy by the NAACP Award-winning playwright, Je'Caryous Johnson. For Thanksgiving (Nov 26-28) you can fast forward to A Christmas Carol and then you can laugh yourself into the New Year with Spamalot (Dec 30-Jan 2).

Even if you don’t have a chance to see a play, you can take a "Backstage Tour" of the theatre. Participants are taken onstage and into chorus and star dressing rooms and are offered a special viewing of the famous "graffiti walls". Tours are available by appointment only. Phone: 203-624-1825. 247 College St New Haven. Phone (shows): 203-562-5666. www.shubert.com

2 - Anne's Blog

FL Exit 131: The Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, having opened its doors in 1923. After becoming the center of all St. Lucie County's cultural activities, it unfortunately closed its doors in 1983, due to the decline of the downtown area and a refusal to convert to multi-screen operation. In 1997, the theatre was purchased by the St. Lucie Preservation Association, and has been completely renovated. It is once again the cultural center of St Lucie County as well as the Treasure Coast.

Broadway shows are interspersed with alot of music, ballet and comedy here. The Diary of Anne Frank is the next show up on Nov 19th. Anne Frank’s words have kept her spirit alive in the minds and hearts of readers all over the world. On Jan 9th, Ed Asner will star in the solo performance drama, “FDR”, based upon Dore Schary’s Broadway hit “Sunrise at Campobello”, which ran 70 weeks on Broadway.

Forever Plaid moves in on Jan 15th, and is a funny, entertaining tribute to friendship, music and the power of following your dream. In four-part harmony, you could be serenaded with some of the 1950s greatest hits such as "Three Coins in the Fountain", "Sixteen Tons", "Chain Gang", "Heart and Soul" and "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing".

The rest of the schedule includes: "The Ultimate Thriller", a musical bow to Michael Jackson, Legends of Doo Wop, An Evening with Garrison Keillor, Chris MacDonald's Memories of Elvis concert, the State Ballet Theatre of Russia (Nutcracker, Giselle) and Howie Mandel. 117 South Second St., Fort Pierce. Tel: 772-461-4884. www.sunrisetheatre.com

3 - Free Small Broadway Tickets

NY Exit 2: Don’t forget that the REAL Broadway is on I-95! On Halloween, October 31, The Broadway League offers you the opportunity to introduce your children to the best theatre anywhere. Kids' Night on Broadway offers free tickets to shows. Some of the delightful offerings that kids would enjoy: Billy Elliot The Musical, Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, The Addams Family, The Lion King, Rain, A Tribute to the Beatles. The way it works is simple: the adult pays for one ticket and the child’s (ages 6-18) ticket is free. www.kidsnightonbroadway.com/kids.php

If that wasn’t enough, all participants in Kids' Night on Broadway are invited to a free pre-show party from 11-2 at Madame Tussauds. There will be lots of Broadway-themed interactive events plus Autograph Alley. Madame Tussauds New York is located at 234 W. 42nd St. between 7th and 8th Ave. www.KidsNightOnBroadway.com for more info www.nycwax.com www.ilovenytheatre.com

4 - Sibling Rivalry

DE Exit 5C: Pierre S. du Pont opened Hotel du Pont, a 12-story Italian Renaissance grand hotel in 1913. It still reflects that time, with its craftsmanship and courtesy. You can dine in the Green Room under the 6 hand-made chandeliers, with carved oak paneling, roomy wing chairs and Versace dinnerware.

When you walk the halls think of Joe Dimaggio, Charles Lindburgh, Eleanor Roosevelt, JFK and Warren Buffett, who also walked them. To top it off, within the edifice there's the Dupont Theatre, with its 1,252 Victorian seats offering 6 national touring productions of Broadway shows each year and an acclaimed children's series.

The Wrong Shade of Black (Oct 23-24) is a powerful and emotional stage play, portraying the hurt and division that two sisters experience as a result of their mother's inability to express unconditional love because of the complexion of their skin. Other shows coming up: Rain (Nov 12-14) is a Tribute to the Beatles, Grease slides in on Feb 8-13, then Young Frankenstein (Mar 1-6) and Beauty and the Beast (May 10-15).

Handel’s Messiah rocks from Dec 7-12 and Craig Ferguson entertains on Oct 18. 1007 N. Market St. Tel: 800-338-0881 or 302-656-4401. www.duponttheatre.com

5 - Meow Meow

MD Exit 57: At Toby's Dinner Theatre (inside the Best Western) you can get energized by a live musical production - and then plop into bed upstairs in your hotel room. The quality of the performance would make NYC proud. Dinner is buffet style (turkey, ham, baked tilapia, chicken picata, onion/pepper mashies, spinach casserole, fresh salad bar and ice cream sundae bar for dessert), and keep an eye on your servers, for they become the performers.

Running until Nov 7, CATS is based on T.S.Elliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats". The story revolves around the antics of feline characters. The most famous one is Grizzabella who sings the hit song "Memory". Although TS Eliot died in 1965, he received a posthumous Tony Award 18 years later for his unwitting contributions to the score.

There are many adaptations of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, but only one Broadway version! From Nov 12 to Jan 2, Ebenezer Scrooge comes to life, with music and lyrics by Alan Menken (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid) and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime and Seusical the Musical). 5625 O'Donnell St. Tel: 866-99Tobys or 410-649-1660. www.tobysdinnertheatre.com

6 - Dumb Blonde

FL Exit 261: The Peabody Auditorium is home to local performances of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Daytona Beach Symphony Society, the Daytona Beach Civic Ballet as well as national artists and performers.

Legally Blonde (Nov 6) is a feel-good song & dance musical. While Fiddler on the Roof (Dec 8), the Tony Award winning musical about poor Jews’ life in Czarist Russia has captured the hearts of people and is filled with heartwarming hits including “Tradition”, “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset”.

Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (Dec 19), which comes to life on stage just in time to highlight the holiday season, has charmed audiences nationally for decades. Also for kids If You Give A Mouse A Cookie (Oct 20) - when a boy shares his snack with a hungry, demanding mouse, he learns a hilarious lesson about cause-and-effect.

The schedule is packed with other diversions such as the U.S. Army Field Band & Chorus Concert, The Nutcracker Ballet, The Sugar Plum Tea and Cirque D'Or. 600 Auditorium Blvd., Daytona Beach. Tel: 386-671-3460. www.peabodyauditorium.org/eventschedule.html
