Collard Green Festival in GA March 5

Held annually on the first Saturday in March, The Collard Green Festival will be the 14th year of the Johnson family’s collard green giveaway.

The first festival began when the farm enjoyed a bumper crop of collard greens

It was time to plant summer crops and farmers Willie and Robert Johnson did not want to plow under edible “collards”.

They called WTOC-TV in Savannah, Georgia, and said they had collard greens to give away

The first year an estimated 500 to 600 people came for free collards.

Collards are given away free to senior citizens, disabled and military families

All others pick the collard greens at a drastically reduced rate to clear the fields.

Low Country foods, activities, and area artisans are part of the festivities.
