DE: Swedish Christmas

Wilmington, DE Exit 6:  The Delaware Swedish Colonial Society sponsors one of Wilmington’s most unique yuletide traditions ; the annual December anniversary of  Sankta Lucia at Old Swedes Church, built in 1798.

Sankta Lucia is a moving celebration that combines two traditions – the pagan ritual of worshiping the Sun God at Midwinter and the Christian Christmas.

Today, the Feast Day of Sankta Lucia, is a holiday still marked by light and music in Sweden. Lucia, surrounded by costumed children, comes down the church’s aisle on the darkest morning of the year with candlelight in her hair.

At the Old Swedes Church in DE, following the ceremony, guests are invited next door to experience A Swedish Christmas, there will be Swedish refreshments, and tours of the Hendrickson House Museum, decorated for a Swedish Christmas.
