ME: Pioneering Vehicles at Cole Land Transportation Museum

Exit 182: When Galen Cole was in WWII and survived a direct hit, he promised God to leave his community a better place. So in 1989, after 50 years of running Cole’s Express trucking, he opened Cole Land Transportation Museum for educating children, preserving history and honoring veterans.

The 200 vehicles show how land transportation pioneers accomplished remarkable feats: plowed snow, fought fires, planted crops, hauled freight and harvested the forest. You can see an 1840 bike, a kid’s pull car, motorcycles and the largest collection of snow plows. Look for the 1842 fox hunting carriage, the fire engine that was pulled by horses, to potato diggers, haying equipment and a 1926 model T Ford which converted to a snowmobile.

Find out that the Stanley Steamer was invented in Maine by twins Freelan and Francis Stanley. Learn that the reason dalmatian dogs were kept near fire trucks was to keep the horses calm. Try to find the $99.50 Sears and Roebuck model T tractor which came in a crate.

On the grounds is the State of Maine WWII Veteran’s and Vietnam Memorials and Maine Military Order of Purple Heart Monument, and a room with a military collection honoring Cole‘s WWII Fifth Armored Division.

ME: Memorable Desserts, Mooseburgers and Affordable Prices at Governor’s

Bangor, ME Exit 185: At the Governor’s Restaurant & Bakery – Locals say, “Eat dessert first” here. For good reason – they’ve got home-made baking and down home cooking.

For breakfast, we loved the banana bread french toast, but there’s also Maine blueberry pancakes, fresh fruit and eggs, hearty hunter’s breakfast, biscuits and sausage.

Lunch or dinner options might be mooseburgers (or the jumbo burger which legend has it was created by owner Wadleigh’s ancestor for Paul Bunyan), haddock chowder, lobster stew, hot meatloaf mountain, fresh clam basket, mac’n cheese and hot dog or Asian shrimp salad, and don’t forget the fried pickles.

Perhaps you may want to start with the nightmare (2 brownies with peanut butter frosting), real strawberry shortcake, warm apple fritter, cream puffs, cheesecake, gingerbread or the salute to Maine: blueberry crumb and whoopie pies. Wash it all down with shakes, strawberry lemonade, beer or wine. Kids will love watching the train going round the ceiling.

FL: Burps, Urine, Snot at Grossology: (Impolite) Science of the Human Body

West Palm Beach, FL Exit 68: Explore why your body produces mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly and stinky gunk at Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body during its appearance at the South Florida Science Center.

This traveling exhibit that explores the human body is adapted from the best-selling children’s book by author and science teacher Sylvia Branzei, using sophisticated animatronics and imaginative displays to demonstrate the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and other bodily functions.

Take a “Tour du Nose” to investigate 10 nasal features, including how your snoot acts as an air filter, a smell sensor and a mucus producer. Play the pinball game “Gas Attack” by scoring off bumpers dressed up as food items that cause gas. Mimic the build up of acid indigestion by causing the “Burp Machine” to release a giant belch. Explore the role of the kidney in a virtual reality experience in “Urine: The Game.” Take a ride on the GI slide, climb a large-scale replica of human skin, and discover other mysterious ways your body’s biology does what it needs to do to keep you healthy.

Your kids will have so much fun at this science-in-disguise, interactive exhibition, oozing with disgusting science and entertaining hands-on educational games, that they won’t even realize how much they are learning.
