FL: Feisty Comedy set for Shakespeare by the Sea’s 26th Season

Palm Beach, FL Exit 79B: Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival Presents ‘The Taming of the Shrew”.  This Shakespeare by the Sea XXVI  FREE outdoor professional theater experience will have the actors appear to be in the atmosphere of a Kentucky Derby, making the costumes and scenery particularly engaging.

The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, written nearly a decade before Much Ado About Nothing. The underlying themes of the production, are the century-long debates on social hierarchy, women’s places in society and how basic human desires supersede all.

Audience members are invited to bring their beach chair, blanket, picnic basket or enjoy food truck concessions. The gates open at 6:30 pm with performances starting at 8 pm. Free Admission, but a $5 donation is suggested.

VA: An American Celebration at Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, VA – Southbound Exit: 177A to Route 1 S, Northbound Exit 163: Spend an American celebration at a truly inspiration place. Mount Vernon salutes our first commander in chief with a dazzling display of made-for-daytime fireworks during its annual Independence Day event. Visitors will be treated to spectacular smoke fireworks in patriotic colors fired over the Potomac River.

The event also includes an uplifting naturalization ceremony for 100 new citizens and listen to the roar of the cannon fire while viewing special military reenactments throughout the day.

There will be a special wreath laying ceremony, free birthday cake (while supplies last), a performance by the National Concert Band’s “Red, White and Blue” concert and a visit from the “first” first couple, “General and Mrs. Washington.”

NH: A Summer Celebration of all Things Ukulele

Dover, NH Exit 4: Want a fun opportunity to meet other Ukulele enthusiasts; join a summer celebration of the ukulele at Henry Law Park. The free, family-friendly event is called SNHUGFEST, and everyone is invited to take part in celebrating all things ukulele with workshops and performances throughout the day.

Enjoy performances by: MB Padfield, Andrea Szirbik, The FLUKES, The Silver Strummers, The Palm Court Serenaders, Craig Werth, Southern Maine Uke Group, The Upper Valley Uke Group, Well Tempered Ukes, and SNHUG.

Performers will often encourage audience participation and sing-alongs, go prepared to sing and strum with your family and friends. In addition to the festivities they will attempt to break the NH strum record, so you are encouraged to bring your ukuleles and go on stage with them at 4:30 to set a new record.

Fredericksburg, VA Exit 130: People of all ages are invited to experience summer fun and great races from one of Fredericksburg’s long-held traditions: the 20th annual Fredericksburg Soap Box Derby featuring 4 different divisions including a category for Special Needs Children.

Spirits run high among competitors, children 8-20 yrs as they compete in this classic non-motorized car race down William St. at top speeds to become the next champion in their division.

Spectators line William Street cheering and ringing cowbells in support of their racers. Pass quietly before the flames on an authentic Venetian gondola, as black-clad performers tend the fires from sunset to midnight while experiencing the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans, an incredible spectacle of fire and sound that changes every time.

Imagine gliding along on a gondola mere feet from the flames, being mesmerized by the union of fire and water.  Take in the flickering firelight on the arched bridges. the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke wafting by, the flotilla of performers traveling along the river in torch-lit vessels,  and the evocative music from all over the world engaging your senses as your gondolier expertly rows you along the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers.

NH: Chowder Lovers: Taste and Vote for the Top Chowder

Portsmouth, NH Exit 7: Eat all you want of some of the most delicious chowder you’ve ever tasted at WOKQ’s annual Chowder Festival. Piping hot chowder made by more than a dozen restaurants across the Seacoast will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the pouring won’t stop until it’s all gone.

Each year, more than 4,000 people help kick off the Prescott Park Arts Festival summer season by enjoying more than 500 gallons of piping hot chowder served up for tasting.
