VA: Native American Dancing, Food, Art at the Cheroenhaka Powwow

Courtland, VA  Exit 11, Route 58: 17th Annual Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Inter-Tribal “Green Corn Dance” Powwow Gathering, relives the history, culture and traditions of the Iroquoian speaking Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indians of Southampton County VA with Chief Red Hawk.

In a maze of color, enjoy Native American dancing, drumming and singing  in the Native American Dance Regalia with special guest, the Aztec Dancers.

If you visit the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian history booth, you could learn to speak the Iroquoian Language, and have a chance to pore over native artifacts dating back to 10,000 BC.

You can meander through the vendors selling Native American arts and Crafts and jewelry. Enjoy the taste of native cuisine: Indian taco, fry bread, fish  and chips, corn soup and funnel cake.

Visit Cattashowrock Town, a 17th century replica Native American palisade village and walk the interpretative trails guided by signage both in the Iroquoian language and in English, identifying flora and fauna indigenous to the area.

MD: They’re Dancin’ in the Streets at Artscape 2015!

Baltimore, MD Exit 53: Artscape is a huge free arts festival, attracting  over 400,000 people over three days. Featuring 150+ fine artists, fashion designers and craftspeople; visual art exhibits on and off-site, including exhibitions, outdoor sculpture, art cars and photography.

Artscape’s live concerts are held on multiple outdoor stages with international and regional singers and musicians performing dance, opera, theater, film, experimental music and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Family events include hands-on projects, demonstrations, competitions, children’s entertainers and street theater. 

As the sun goes down, Charles Street comes alive with Artscape After Hours. Wander through the illuminated streets and enjoy the international menu of food and beverages.

Admission is FREE and open to the public.  Artscape is held outdoors in tents, and inside the neighborhood’s premier exhibition spaces and performing arts venues. The event is handicapped accessible.

VA: Historican Conference for War Gamers and Games

Fredericksburg, VA Exit 130B: Historican, the Wall Street Journal refers to this event as “the Mother of all wargaming conventions”.  Attracting about 3500-4000 people from around the world  and around 100 vendors presenting everything you need to recreate military battles throughout history or transform into battles depicted from your own imagination.

Miniature gamers and military history enthusiasts partake in hundreds of interactive tabletop games, tournaments, demonstrations, seminars, training sessions, painting classes and competitions. The majority of events are history-related, with the remainder being fantasy, science fiction, steampunk, or horror miniature games.

Each year, Historicon has a different theme every year, this years being: the End of Empires.  Numerous games and supporting events are geared around this focal point. Awards are presented to the Best Theme Event, as well as best games in specific time slots and other honors for particularly well-received or impressive games.

Activities go from 8am until the wee hours. If you are a gamer, and/or military history buff this event is for you.

CT: Celebrate Independence Day Circa 1876

Mystic, Ct Exit 90: Celebrate America’s birthday circa 1876 this Fourth of July at Mystic Seaport. Appreciate all the  festivities: beginning with an exhilarating morning of boat races on the Mystic River, military exercises with the 27th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on the Village Green, and an old-fashioned spelling bee for children.

At noon picnic alongside your 19th-century neighbors, at at 1 pm cheer for your favorite exhibit in the  Independence Day Parade. Young patriots will enjoy crafting hats,  and a spirited 1876 Independence Day ceremony will be followed by a cultured concert.

With so many activities you can spend the afternoon playing croquet with residents of 1876 Greenmanville, enjoy live theatrical performances, and partake in churning some ice cream and indulging in the delicious results. Don’t forget to save some energy for 19th-century lawn games on the Village Green.

ME: Sweetest Day of the Year in Maine – Whoopie Pie Fest

Dover-Foxcroft, ME, Exit 185:  Maine Whoopie Pie Festival was founded in 2008 by the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft as a celebration of the uniquely Maine dessert.  The festival draws people from all corners of the state, country and world to  sample whoopie pies from dozens of bakers sharing their love of whoopie pies.

Live music, artists, vendors, crafters, attractions, food and fun for all ages, including the Kids Whoopie Zone with tons of activities including games, rides, and magic all day long.
