Selma, NC Exit 97: Much more than a tobacco outlet, this store is a whole city block of bargains in perfume, books, makeup, garden ornaments, housewares, biker gear, jewelry, toys, Western wear, junk food, towels, casual clothes and a doll section, etc.

Across the back of the store is one of the largest cigar emporiums you’ll ever see. You can only exit the store through one door, so make sure to park near there.

Enjoy the largest parade celebrating Washington’s birthday in the USA. With nearly 3,500 participants, this community parade honors one of the City’s favorite sons.

Get a great view of the festivities from the  spectators stand on Royal Street at King Street. The George Washington Birthday Celebration Parade marches a one-mile route through the streets of Old Town Alexandria, beginning at the corner of Gibbon St. and S. Fairfax St., then traveling north on S. Fairfax St. and turning west on Queen St. After one block, the parade continues south on S. Royal St, ending on Wilkes St. Admission is free.

Also free admission on George Washington Parade Day is the Open House at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, where you can learn from costumed guides and the museum’s Junior Docents about the place George Washington dined and danced in Alexandria.

FL: It’s Hot & Spicy Pig Races at Florida Agricultural Museum

Palm Coast, FL  Exit 298: The 5th Annual Hot Foods N’ Spicy Blues Festival at Florida Agricultural Museum features an international fair of spicy foods from area restaurants and retailers, as well as a variety of micro-brews.

Highlights include live Blues performances, spotlighting Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton, who entertains with his unique homegrown storytelling and natural-born guitar talent while making a show out of cooking up a giant pot of gumbo and sharing it with the crowd at the end of the performance.

Other attractions include: chases racing – where pigs race, swimming pigs,  a children’s Fun Zone, and free trolley tours of the museum’s farm and historic structures, and of course the amazing food.

Bring a lawn chair, admission is $5 per person, with proceeds helping to support museum programs and to benefit Feed Flagler initiative supporting those in need in the community.

The boats can drive over the water vegetation without harming anything. They can inch very very slowly to glimpse gators, osprey (hope you get to see Ozzie and Harriet), peregrine falcons, armadillo or anhingas – or fly at high speeds across the open stretches of water. What fun!

GA: Glass Treasure Hunt on Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, GA Exit 29:  Every winter, throughout the months of January and February, the Jekyll Island Authority hosts a beach treasure hunt known as Island Treasures.

Colorful hand-crafted glass floats or globes, similar to the ones once used on fishing nets, are created by glass artisans from across the country. These collectible treasures are hidden daily along the beach for lucky treasure hunters to find.

Each is unique and stamped with the year to be a collector’s item for the lucky beachcomber who finds one. Those who find the lovely glass floats may register them at the Jekyll Island Visitor Information Center in order to receive a bio of the artist and a certificate of authenticity for each found treasure.

This Island Treasures event is FREE and lots of fun for all ages!

SC: 80,000 pounds of Oysters Eaten in a Day

Mount Pleasant, SC Exit 86A: The Greater Charleston Restaurant Association will host the 32nd Annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival on Sunday, January 25, 2015. This charity event brings in thousands of event goers who consume over 80,000 lbs of oysters.

Highlights include the legendary “Oyster Shucking” and “Oyster Eating” Contests, live music on the main stage, wine, a selection of domestic and imported beers, a Children’s Area.

Not a fan of the salty crustacean, no problem, there will be a food court showcasing a variety of local favorite restaurants to satisfy everyone’s taste.
