Rocky Mount, NC Exit 138: This seasonal event celebrates the sights and joyous sounds of the season with a traditional laser celebration that will captivate the whole family. Vibrant colors and charming animations bring new light to your favorite holiday tunes.

Included extravaganza is “Laser 101,” an educational and fun mini-show, where an excitable electron presents this brief but informative demonstration on how lasers work, right before the main feature.

VA: Sound and Light Xmas Show Inside your Car Plus Santa’s Village

Doswell, VA Exit 98: As you drive through the Meadow Event Park to take in the Illuminate Light Show & Santa’s Village, you will experience hundreds of thousands of LED lights synchronized to music from your car radio. The show features an 80-foot tunnel of lights, 50-foot Christmas trees, dancing snowmen and singing Christmas trees.

After the show, spend some time in Santa’s Village where fun awaits for the whole family. There will be photos with Santa, children’s activities, Christmas trees and food. It stays opened until Dec 24th, Santa departs Dec. 23rd (he has lots of work to accomplish at the North Pole!).

The cost of admission is for the car which can have from 1-9 people; You can save $2 by buying a ticket in advance using the website provided here.

NH: Past Traditions in Candlelight Stroll through Historic Homes

Portsmouth, NH Exit 7: The 35th Annual Candlelight Stroll at the Strawbery Banke Museum showcases 350 years of seasonal and holiday traditions against the backdrop of the museum’s historic houses.

On these weekend evenings, the museum grounds glow with hundreds of lighted candle lanterns, the houses are adorned with thousands of hand-made decorations crafted from live greens and dried flowers and herbs collected from the museum gardens, and the air is filled with the sound of holiday music and scent of woodsmoke.

Visitors stroll from house to historic house, greeted by costumed role players and performers who recreate the traditions of times past, rediscovering the joys of simpler times.

Some highlights include: live music and holiday entertainment for all ages, horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday decoration demonstrations, traditional barrel making demonstrations, 18th century holiday hearth cooking, and tinsmith demonstrations.

RI: Learn to Paint Animals at the Roger Williams Zoo

Providence, RI Exit 16N or 17S: Create your very own masterpiece at Roger Williams Zoo’s Paint Night at the Zoo. The workshop is designed to guide budding artists of all skill levels step by step through creating artwork depicting flamingos, peacocks, elephants or giraffes.

For $35, they’ll provide everything you need: canvas, paints, brushes, a smock and even a glass of wine for participants 21 and older. This is a 16+ event.

Space is limited, and pre-registration is required (there is a waiting list for events that are full).

They are presently working on the Spring schedule which will include: red pandas, zebras, owls, and an additional giraffe workshop.

Richmond, Va Exit 83: A holiday tradition at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, the Dominion Gardenfest of Lights, features more than half-a-million twinkling lights arranged throughout the 40-acre garden. Hundreds of trees are wrapped in lights and winding pathways are full of surprises.

Hand-crafted botanical decorations, model trains, holiday dinners available with reservations , firepit with s’mores and hot chocolate (for purchase).

Nightly family activities such as: Merry Mondays; storytime fireside with garden keeper & visits from butterfly fairy, caroling Tuesdays, crafty Wednesdays; Families can join garden staff and make crafts, musical Thursdays; acoustic musicians perform festive entertainment.

Richmond,Va Exit 78: Buz and Ned’s – Buz worked his way thru kitchens in BBQ havens in Texas, Kansas City, Memphis and Lexington KY, and then merged all that expertise with Ned’s 150- year old family recipe into his own scrumptious BBQ.

For the past 22 years, his ribs (baby back, spare or beef) have been a hit, there’s hearty Brunswick stew (chock full of corn, string beans, carrots, and potatoes), killer chili, Sandra’s favorite: beef brisket, and you-could-eat-alone sides of chunky smokey baked beans, cukes & onions, sweet potato fries and, of course, hush puppies. Mystic, CT Exit 90: Mystic Aquarium – The sea lion (Coco, Surfer, Boomerang and Jetty) show is bound to please the whole family. Plan ahead to take advantage of their Beluga Contact Program where you can go into the water with a whale: you‘ll hear it breathe, spout and vocalize and get to touch it.

Besides all their exotic fish, underwater explorer Dr. Robert Ballard’s team’s findings are on view, including the Titanic at 12,450’ below.

Walk through the Fluorescent Coral exhibit and find out how fluorescence is being used for research projects to find cures and treatments for Alzheimer’s and cancer.
