NH: Portsmouth Restaurant Week

Portsmouth, NH Exit 7: This fall’s celebration of delicious Restaurant Week will take place Thursday, November 6 – Saturday November 15, 2014 and will feature close to 50 restaurants located in Portsmouth and the Seacoast.

The restaurant scene provides every kind of cuisine imaginable – much locally sourced – at establishments ranging from chef-owned restaurants to local breweries.

Make this your culinary destination. Participating restaurants offer special 3-course prix fixe menus at two special prices: $16.95 for lunch or $29.95 for dinner. Prices are generally per person and do not include beverages, taxes or gratuity.

FL: Aargh – Watch out for Pirates in St. Augustine

St Augustine, FL Exit 318: Immerse yourself in the days of yore amongst the pirates in the US’s oldest city. For 3 days, the whole family can enjoy historic exhibits, living history demonstrations, a privateer parade, pirate battles, and a thieves market.

Visitors are encouraged to don pirate attire and be entertained by the Black Heart and Ancient City Privateers. They will be showing off in weapons demonstrations, a sailor’s encampment, a pirate mutiny, a pirate court to try transgressors, and telling entertaining stories of the high seas. There is a Matey’s play area for the little ones.

SC: Florence Offers Nutty Pecan Fun

Florence, SC Exit 160: The South Carolina Pecan Festival is in Historic Downtown Florence on the 100 blocks of Evans, Irby, Dargan, and Cheves Streets in the heart of Florence, South Carolina.

This fun-filled day hosts 8 stages of live entertainment and over 250 food & craft vendors, special art demonstrations, a Free kids’ zone, amusement rides, and antique tractor show, car show, cook-off competition, vocal competition, corn hole competition, 10K, 5k, and half marathon races, a  half metric Century bike ride, and more.

FL: Does-Y-Doe at History and Folk Culture Jamboree

Barberville, FL Exit 268 : Relive pioneer times, Florida history and folk culture at the 38th Annual Fall Country Jamboree . The “Barberville” Jamboree is one of the best known and longest running heritage festivals in Florida.

Highlights include: more than 100 historical demonstrators, re-enactors, artisans and trades people from around the state, live music on five stages all day both days, juried arts and crafts show, historical exhibits, storytelling and Florida “Cracker” style foods such as BBQ, and a corn boil.

This family-friendly event also offers music workshops and jam tents open to everyone, and children’s activities including a Junior Jam and Fiddle Hunt, and even an Old Time Barn Dance with a live band. Grab a partner and does-y-doe.

NC: Learn How Cotton is Make at Festival

Dunn, NC Exit 73 : The Touchstone Energy North Carolina Cotton Festival is held annually the first Saturday in November in recognition  to one of North Carolina’s prime agricultural products “cotton”.

November is peak season for cotton farmers and the festival offers free tours through the local cotton gin highlighting actual cotton production.

The event takes up more than 11 city blocks mainly on Broad Street, Wilson Avenue and Edgerton Street, featuring two stages of entertainment including a variety of music, a classic car show showcasing more than 100 cars, Karaoke ContestKiddie Land , crafts and food, and lots of  shopping opportunities throughout the festival.  Best of all, admission is FREE!

NC: Smell the Smoke at Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown

Rocky Mount, NC Exit 138:  With almost 50 competitors, see how the professionals cook BBQ at the 7th Annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down and get to taste award winning barbecue. BBQ vendors will be selling barbecue chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket.

VA: Cows-n-Corn

VA Exit 133 Falmouth, Route 17N:  Just about an hour NW of Fredericksburg you can enjoy an adventure in agriculture. At this working dairy farm, home to 100 Holstein cows, ride a hay wagon around the farm and learn first hand about cow life from baby calves to the adult dairy cows, about modern farming techniques and get lost in a 10 acre corn maze.

Activities included in the price of admission($9 – ages 3-99): Hayride tour of the dairy farm, meet & greet a cow, puppet shows, play area, butter making, corn maze, cow train rides.

Friday Nights $10 per person, 6pm to 9pms are Hot Dog & Hayride nights, enjoy the corn maze and farm at night as well as campfires, play area, and hayride. Hot dog and drink included.

The “General Store” offers you the opportunity to purchase apple butter, pumpkin butter, cheese, and delicious ice cream made right on the premises and sold by the scoop.

SC: Fishing, Camping Supplies and Preserves at the Santee General Store

Santee, SC Exit 98: Anglers head to this store for fishing needs to catch catfish and stripers in Lake Marion. Rods by Zebco and Daiwa, Daiichi hooks, Dorman lures, Terminator spinners, Eagle Claw lead or Zoom worms are all here.

For bait there are crickets, shad, red worms, night crawlers and herring.

Campers can pick up cast iron cookware and portable BBQ grills. Shelves are stocked with house brand preserves: tomatillo salsa, canteloup jam, asparagus chow chow, moonshine jelly and scuppernong cider, but locals know to pick up some of (owner) Uncle Ed’s BBQ sauce too. Stone ground grits are there, of course, and fireworks and Western Union.

NC: Benson Mule Days

Benson, NC Exit 79 : Benson Mule Days is one of the largest festivals in North Carolina and is a fun-filled weekend packed with activities such as rodeos, a mule pulling contest,  arts and crafts, vendors, street dances, carnival rides, camping, parade, bluegrass shows, barrel racing and free trolley rides.

It kicks off with a concert on Thursday night in the Benson Singing Grove (located in downtown Benson). The Benson Mule Days Parade, held on Saturday, starting at 10 am, has hundreds of horses, mules, buggies, and unusual entries, and lasts 2 1/2 hours. Saturday night there is a Mule Days Dance, where all ages are invited.

Visitors to this festival come from as far away as Alaska, Germany and California. Check website for various dates, times and locations of events.
