NC: Smithfield Ham & Yam Festival

NC Exit 95:  There is fun for the whole family when Smithfield honors their agricultural history with their 30th annual Ham & Yam Festival.

Activities including a barbecue cook-off, “What’s That Yam Thing?” contest, Miss Ham & Yam pageant, Rubber Duck Race, Hot Dog Eating Contest,  and food vendors with both ham & yam offerings.

You can also stroll through hundreds of booths with vendors selling items including garden flags, handbags, kitchen tools, handmade jewelry and arts and crafts.

NC: Annual Lumbee Spring Pow Wow

Lumberton, NC Exit 20: “Dance of the Spring Moon” is the Annual Lumbee Spring Pow Wow Celebration of the Lumbee Indians. The event attracts over 400 dancers and 10,000 spectators from across the country, and is said to be  one of the largest native gatherings on the East Coast .

Three days of festivities include traditional Native American Indian food, arts & crafts, music and dance. There will also be dance and drum competition.

DE: Downton Abbey Costumes

Wilmington, DE (Exit 5) : If you’re a Downton Abbey buff, this  exhibition is for you. The Costumes of Downton Abbey Exhibition opens on March 1, 2014 through January 4, 2015  at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.

Approximately 40 historically inspired costumes from the award winning television show will be on display, as well as photographs and other mementos inspired by the fictional series, capturing the authenticity and essence of the period.  Visitors will experience life during the first half of the twentieth century in an aristocratic British household.

PA: ARTiculture at the 2014 Philadelphia Flower Show

PA: Northbound  Exit 5C and Southbound  Exit 3: Sometimes on a long drive, you’ve got to stop and smell the roses. Why not experience the world’s longest-running and enormous indoor Flower Show, which attracts more than 260,000 people annually.

The  185th PHS Philadelphia Flower Show; is a melange of art and horticulture, a tribute to everyone from Michelangelo to Monet, Picasso to Pollock, and da Vinci to Dali, and appropriately titled;  2014: “ARTiculture”, which will be unveiled  March 1, 2014 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The Show features large-scale gardens, elaborate landscapes, and spectacular floral creations. Not only will you enjoy exceptional design, there is also live entertainment, culinary demonstrations, gardening how-to workshops, and lectures by experts.

Proceeds from the Show support PHS, particularly the City Harvest program, which feeds more than 1,200 families each week during the growing season.

NC: Rumba on the Lumber

NC Exit 20:  In Lumberton, NC, the Rumba is a festival featuring healthy activities, tons of food and the Bud Light Chili Cook-off, one of the largest in North Carolina. In addition, the whole family can enjoy the FREE Lumbee River EMC Kid Zone for the entire afternoon

It starts with a Family Bike Ride at 9 am.  Then onto  the  Southeastern Health Family Fun Mile at 10 am. This is a FREE event open to the entire family. Over the years it has continued to grow , often with over 1,000 children lining up at the start.

The Southeastern Health 5K Run begins at 1  am.  It starts in downtown Lumberton, with the course making it way through tree-lined streets, historic homes and along the Lumber River. Not only do all winners receive original artwork as their awards, but there is also prize money up for grabs.

MA: Human Dog Sled Competition

MA Exit 32A: Each February, traditionally on the weekend following Super Bowl Sunday,  the city of Lowell hosts Winterfest, a a two day festival held annually celebrating the winter season.

One of the most popular events is the Human Dog Sled Competition. This event is nationally-covered and extremely entertaining, consisting of several six-person teams dressed in wacky costumes.  Each team competes for titles of “Top Dog” and “Best Costume,” with cash prizes awarded to the winning teams.

In 2003, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recognized the competition for its animal-friendly approach to winter fun.

At the 14th Annual Winterfest Festival, you can enjoy live entertainment and many children’s activities including face painting ,magic shows, ice skating, as well as a fireworks display.

Foodies will appreciate the famous Soup Bowl Competition featuring entries by some of the city’s finest restaurants.

VA: George Washington Birthday Celebration

Va Exit 177: A citywide celebration is held for the anniversary of George Washington’s birth in his adopted hometown of Alexandria.

The annual George Washington Birthday Parade, the largest and oldest in the country celebrating this Founding Father, winds its way through a one-mile route along the historic streets of Old Town. The parade includes thousands of participants such as historical, community and youth groups, bands, horses and canines.

Other festivities include a 10-K Race and 2-K Fun Run, Revolutionary War re-enactment at Fort Ward Park, free admission to historic sites, popular walking tours, 18th-century dance classes, Madeira wine tastings and even the foodie-favorite “Cherry Challenge,” a cherry-themed competition among local restaurants.
