MD: Eastern Regional Exhibition of Oil Paintings

Annapolis, MD: Oil Painters of America will be bringing its annual Eastern Regional Exhibition, to Maryland for the very first time, on October 18-20 . The McBride Gallery will be hosting the juried exhibition featuring the work of more than 95 of today’s leading East Coast Artists.

Plein air painting events will take place around Annapolis on each of the three days.  Catch the art discussions and painting demos on Saturday,Oct.19, meet the artists reception: Sunday, October 20, 1-4pm, as well as the awards ceremony on Sunday, October 20 at 2pm.

All of the events are free and open to the public

VA: Minnie and Mickey Mouse Would Love this Cheese Shop

VA Exit 177: Cheesetique is a combo cheese shop, and wine and cheese bar which is perfect when you want an elegant picnic for the car which is so not road food (cranberry chevre cupcakes, burnt fig jam). The friendly cheesemongers are very generous with offering tastes.

To sample many varieties in the cafe, order a board of 3,5,6 or 10 cheeses accompanied by cornichons, quince paste, and grapes or a charcouterie board. There are grown up grilled cheese options like: Havarti, raspberry jam, walnuts and scallions, or  caramelized onion, cheddar, bacon, dill pickles and a dash of olive mustard. Or you can try the fig and brie crostini,  quiche lorraine, mac ‘n cheesetique (of course) – but with truffle infused bread crumbs.

You can bring home a make-your-own cheese kit, a bacon chocolate chip pancake mix or 12 kinds of honey. Mickey Mouse would love this shop; It’s a great date place to take Minnie.

Delaware Art Museum – American Moderns Exhibition

Wilmington, DE:  The major traveling exhibition of American Moderns, 1910- 1960, opens at the Delaware Art Museum on October 12, 2013. This display featuring the works from O’Keeffe to Rockwell, comes from the Brooklyn Museum’s renowned American Art collection.

It is scheduled to be on display through January 5, 2014.  The 57 paintings and sculptures  showcases the leading artists of the period.  Artists to look for includes; Georgia O’Keeffe, Milton Avery, Marsden Harley, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman and Norman Rockwell.and The exhibit features a wide variety of artistic styles; Synchronism, Cubism, Precisionism, Expressionism and Social Realism.

NJ: Birding for Beginners

Teaneck, NJ, exit 70: Interested in birdwatching, but not sure how to get started? Here is an opportunity from the Bergen County Audubon Society to learn how to identify birds, and how to choose and use binoculars and field guides properly.

MD: Butterflies Fly

Wheaton, MD: Witness the cycle of life of the butterfly; as tiny eggs hatch into actual crawling caterpillars, which then encase themselves in jewel-like chrysalides and emerge as sipping, flying adult butterflies.

Attract butterflies to your own garden by learning which annual and tropical plants, and shrubs are  best  to use as nectar sources.

CT: Beardsley Zoo

Exit 27A>: Beardsley Zoo – Before you leave, print out one of the themed scavenger hunts from their web site, then take a break here (at this 1922 Olmstead designed zoo). Of the 120 species to enjoy, come meet Naka, a female Amur (Siberian) tiger, part of the Special Survival Plan, since only about 44 of these great cats survive.

Pass by the Tropics Rainforest with a free flight aviary, a New England farmyard with goats to feed or bunnies to pet, Alligator Alley, and a pop-up prairie dog exhibit. Animals include a maned wolf, black vulture, otters, ocelots, yellow banded poison frog, vampire bat, bison and one of the smallest primates: a pygmy marmoset.

Don’t forget a ride on the carousel.
