FL: “Anything That Floats” Race

Key Largo, FL : Everyone is invited  to the “Anything that Floats” race on Blackwater Sound. You won’t want to miss the unusual event that turned the regatta world upside-down.  This crazy event is an on-the-water race of homemade vessels crafted from items found around the house. That’s right. It’s anything that floats.

Vessels made of materials that you can find around your house such as: cardboard, wood, PVC, duct tape, milk jugs, 5 gallon buckets, saran wrap, old T-shirts to be used for sails, outdoor furniture, old bikes, and pool noodles.  Just no motors, inflatable rafts, foaCourtesy The Florida Keys & Key Westm, or pool toys are allowed.

You can enter your own vessel and join the regatta on Blackwater Sound, or cheer on your favorite team from land as the contestants navigate the course from the Caribbean Club to Sundowners and back.

Prizes will be awarded for: Fastest: 2 person team, 4 person team, or unlimited team, Best decorated boat under 18 feet, best decorated boat over 18 feet, Best Looking Crew (in costumes), and the best hard luck story. Everyone that enters and competes is a winner.

Ranch Sorting is an event that challenges a team of two riders on horseback against the clock.  Both riders work in harmony to cut out the correctly numbered cattle and separate them while keeping

the other cattle back.  This takes a partnership not only between the horse and rider but also good communication between the riders.  Ranch sorting is a fun event to watch as the

teams show off their skills.

This is the 3rd in a series of 4 shows.  An additional show will be held later in the year on November 30.  There will be Open, Pro/Am, Amateur and Beginner divisions.

At Charles River Canoe & Kayak you can take a cooling break in a kayak ($15/hr ), canoe ($17/hr), paddleboat ($18/hr) or rowboat ($24/hr), and glide 3 miles up or down river. They even have even have infant vests). You can also take lessons or buy a boat.

CT: North Branford Potato & Corn Festival

CT Exit 55 : North Branford celebrates these two starchy staples on the first weekend of August with the 11th annual Potato & Corn Festival. PA: Blueberry Pie Eating Contest

Bethlehem, PA: This weekend don’t miss the sweetest festival of the summer.BlueberryFest Taking place at Burnside Plantation, a 6.6 acre farm in the city, it’s a weekend of live music, history , crafts, and fabulous blueberry foods.

There is a tasting tent, and for an additional $4 festival attendees 21 years and older can enjoy four samples of craft brews, or if you prefer, wines; including novelties  as Blueberry Bliss Punch and Blueberry Belch. There will even be live brewing demonstrations.

Let’s not forget the  Blueberry Pie-Eating Contest. For the first time ever this event will be held twice a day.You can sign up if you want to compete in the sweetest, not to mention bluest, contest ever.

FL: Marine Science Camps at Pigeon Key

Key West, Fl: More than 30,000 kids from throughout the continental United States, Alaska and as far away as China have traveled to participate in this hands-on, interactive education at one of the Florida Keys’ most historic locations; Pigeon Key’s Marine Science Camp.

Campers are provided with background of the marine world around them, and then immersed in the field, allowing them to utilize their newly acquired knowledge.

Workshops include topics such as Marine Mammals, Reef Fish Identification, Coral Reef Systems. Marine Habitats of the Florida Keys, Invertebrate Biodiversity, Marine Adaptations, Shark Biology & Dissection, Plankton Lab, etc.PigeonKeyCamp

Imagine fun activities, such as, marine organism scavenger hunts, an underwater obstacle course, a Sombrero Reef snorkel trip aboard a 40-foot catamaran called the “Spirit”.

Campers are provided with all marine programs & workbook, snorkel trip to Sombrero Reef, snorkel gear for the week, meals, Pidgeon Key T-shirt & water bottle, summer CD with pictures of  their camp experience, and award certificate. Both Day & Overnight Camps are for ages 8-18.

FL: Ernest Hemingway Look-Alike Contest

Key West, FL: Throughout 1930’s Hemingway resided in Key West, penning some of his now classic novels. The Pulitzer prize winning author’s legacy will be commemorated  Tuesday through Sunday, July 16-21, 2013, during the 33rd annual “Hemingway Days” celebration.

With scheduled events that include the popular look-alike contest, a museum exhibit of rare Hemingway memorabilia, a quirky “”Running of the Bulls” with man made bulls and a 3 day Marlin catch and release tournament to share Hemingway’s well known passion for the deep-sea sport.HemingwayPapa-Kiss-2012

There is also a 5K run and paddle board race, photo’s with “Papa Hemingway’s”, the annual arm-wrestling contest,  Caribbean Street Fair, and even a birthday bash complete with cake honoring the 114th anniversary of Hemingway’s July 21 birthday.

In addition, fans can visit the author’s former Key West home, which is now a museum, at 907 Whitehead St.

DE: Annual Sandcastle Contest

DE: The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 35th Annual Sandcastle Contest. Over 100 teams are expected to express their artistic flair. Past creations have included swamp animals, mermaids, pyramids, crabs, dolphins, sharks and of course traditional sandcastles.

The contest is open to both adults and children. Sculptures may be started at any time on the day of competition, but must be completed for judging by 3:00 pm. Winners will be announced by 5 pm.  Beachgoers who would rather watch than work are welcome to view the incredible creations FREE of charge.
