FL: Future of Family Dining is here

FL Exit 339: Latitude 30 – If you just couldn’t decide what to do tonight, should I go out to a restaurant, grab a pizza, go bowling, watch a movie, take the kids to an arcade, catch a sporting event, or enjoy a comedy show, you don’t have to choose – head here. You can dine deliciously in the restaurant, for food comes first here, or in any of the above while you enjoy your entertainment.

Noise level is high so babies can cry and the kids don’t have to be quiet or sit still while you finish eating – this is the future of family dining. The sports theater sports 19 screens, the pizza chef is stretching and tossing dough by the brick oven, the cocktail area is buzzing, the arcade is dinging (prizes right up to an iPad), bowling balls are crashing in the 20 lanes (comfy couches) while their 9 screens are showing sporting events so you don’t miss anything (football AND bowling) or you can escape into one of the 2 movie theaters. If that wasn’t enough action, there’s live music Thurs-Sat nights.

You can just sit and watch it all while you have a tiramisu martini (or 40 brands of beer) and then chow into: a prime rib kabob with creamy horse radish sauce, quesadilla, lettuce wrapped Asian chicken in peanut ginger sauce, sesame crusted teriyaki calamari with citrus wasabi aioli, steak and blue cheese in flat bread, shrimp po’ boy, chicken salad with cherries and pecans, blackened mahi mahi or build your own burger.

Dinner entree salads can be made with flat iron steak or blackened ahi, there’s a chopped cobb salad, lobster mac n cheese, veal pot roast, Guinness fish and chips, bacon wrapped scallops and we loved the homemade potato chips. Southern red velvet cake and bread pudding can finish it off for you. You will need to take advantage of the free valet parking, the lot is packed.

No Tolls On I-95

A couple of States are planning to pass laws to charge tolls through all or sections of I-95 in their State. Virginia and North Carolina have started citizen campaigns to try and stop this awful idea.

Call North Carolina Congressmen and Senators to ask the Federal Highway Administration to NOT approve NCDOT’s application to toll I-95 in a pilot program.

US Senator Richard Burr: 202-224-3154
US Senator Kay Hagan: 202-224-6342
US State Representative G.K. Butterfield: 202-225-3101

You can also call the Federal Highway Administration to ask to stop this.

For Virginia there’s a web site to go to: www.virginiatollfree95.com

We’ve also heard rumors about this in Maryland too.

George Washington’s Church for the Holiday

VA Exit 177B: Christ Church’s (1767) fame rests on the fact that both George Washington and Robert E. Lee worshipped here. In the front left, notice Washington’s pew (#60) – the only one remaining in its original double configuration. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee (# 46 on the right) was married to Washington’s step-great granddaughter, Mary Custis. Regular congregants refer to the chapel’s geography as the Lee side or the Washington side. Notice an original boot scraper outside the door (Washington side). Perhaps one of these gentlemen used it.During the Civil War, Col. Orlando Willcox of the Union Army wrote of Washington’s connection to the church, “There I could almost feel his imposing presence…”.

It is a tradition for each President of the US to visit here at some point during his administration, usually on a Sunday near Washington’s birthday (Feb 22). Tours are given. 118 N. Washington St., Alexandria. www.historicchristchurch.org Tel: 703-549-1450. Christmas Services: December 24: 3pm Holy Eucharist, 5:30 pm Holy Eucharist (Auditorium), 5:30 pm Festival Eucharist (with 20-min. organ prelude), 8 pm Festival Eucharist (with 20-min. organ prelude), 10:30 pm Festival Eucharist (with 20-min. organ prelude); Tuesday, December 25: 10 am Holy Eucharist.

DE Our Lady Queen of Peace Statue

You can’t miss her, high on a hill with her arms outstretched in front of Holy Spirit Church, with the sun bouncing off the 33′ high stainless steel statue. Father Sweeney started the project for Our Lady Queen of Peace Statue with the power of prayer.

A committee used “Rosary Checks” to record the number of rosaries that an individual prayed for the building of a statue. The goal was for 500,000 before any fund raising began. Not only did the number of rosaries prayed exceed this, but unsolicited donations came in before any formal fund raising began.

Sculptor Charles C. Parks did 2 others on the same theme honoring the Virgin Mary. This one, though, is sometimes referred to as “Our Lady of the Highways” as it sits majestically on the approach to the the Delaware Memorial Bridge. www.ourlady-de.org

CIA Codebreaker reveals 147 yr old Civil War Message in VA

The piece of paper with a message for a Confederate leader was rolled up with a white thread and sealed along with a 38 caliber bullet in a glass vial.

It remained a mystery for 147 years, until a CIA codebreaker cracked the message had the vial opened.

The message was from a Confederate commander, on the west side of the Mississippi River across from Pemberton.

He’s saying ‘I can’t help you. I have no troops, I have no supplies, I have no way to get over there.

The bottle, less than two inches in length, had sat undisturbed at the museum since 1896.

A retired CIA code breaker, David Gaddy, was contacted, and he cracked the code in several weeks.

The code is called the ‘Vigenere cipher,’ a centuries-old encryption in which letters of the alphabet are shifted a set number of places so an ‘a’ would become a ‘d’-essentially, creating words with different letter combinations.

The code was widely used by Southern forces during the Civil War.

Lincoln Into Art Galley

Artist Wendy Allen has devoted much of her life to capturing the essence of Lincoln. Her portraits are known worldwide, and she helps people understand Lincoln himself through the details in her work. “For me, his face is familiar and comforting,” she said. “It symbolizes humanity, wisdom and moral courage. I want people to see him as a modern figure, still powerful and relevant, and with much to teach us.” Her gallery features many of her Lincoln images for the public to enjoy.
