Eli Whitney’s Inn

If you like to stay at friendly owner-owned inns, the Inn at Mulberry Grove is close in to Savannah and is offering a price sale until the end of July: Mon-Thurs it’s only $69.99 and on the weekends $79.99. There’s a  touch of European elegance here with gilded mirrors and dark wood furnishings. The hot breakfast with sausage, biscuits, grits and waffles can be taken on the patio – and – you can buy bottles of wine to enjoy at the end of your day.

Mulberry Grove was the name of the plantation where Eli Whitney arrived as a tutor for widow Mrs. Nathaniel Greene’s children (hubby was 2nd in command to Washington). He recognized the need to speed up the process of separating cottonseeds from cotton fibers and in about a year, he gained worldwide recognition for inventing the cotton gin which revolutionized the South’s cotton industry. In the Civil War, General Sherman burned down the original house but now you can stay in this Inn on the same land.
