MD: Dog Day Afternoon: Costumes, Dog Artists and Tail-Wagging Fun

Columbia, MD Exit 43, route 100: Inviting all canines and their people to the  9th Annual Dog Day Afternoon hosted by the Columbia Association. What better way to spend an afternoon than with man’s best friend and this event promises a dog-gone good time for dogs and humans alike.

Dog lovers can enter their four-legged friends into the Tail-Wagging Contest, Bone-Eating Contest, Columbia’s Cutest Canine Contest, Most Fashionable & Best Costume Show, and more.

Some of the featured entertainment includes: music, raffles, food (for dogs and humans), off-leash play and treats, face painting, arts and crafts station, caricature artists who do drawings of your dog, and pet communications readings with pet communicator Emerald DuCoeur.

Admission to Dog Day Afternoon is FREE. Pet readings $10 for 10 minutes. Caricature drawings are $5 for black-and-white and $10 for a color. Only cash  will be accepted during Dog Day Afternoon. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a local shelters, rescues. Donations of  dog/cat food, treats, biscuits, new toys will be collected and donated to local shelters, rescues.

VA: Experience Battle of Petersburg First Hand

Petersburg,VA Exit 52: For all  Revolutionary War buffs you can  attend the 233nd anniversary of the Reenactment of the 1781 Battle of Petersburg. The re-created battles and encampment will be held at Battersea, the home of Colonel John Banister, the first mayor of Petersburg and a signer of the Articles of Confederation. While Battersea is not the actual site of the 1781 battlefield, it was utilized by the British troops when they occupied the town in May of 1781.

Battersea consists of 35 acres of tactical ground and camp for foot, horse and artillery. The city will be hosting a Saturday evening meal and dance. Activities include: the reenactment of the 1781 battle, battle skirmishes, period music, children’s activities and games, blacksmith demonstrations and  more. Cost of the tickets for the general public: adults – $5.00, children 12 and under Free.

FL: Japanese Festival – Taiko Drummers, Tea Ceremony, Bonsai

FL Exit 51:  In Delray Beach, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens holds a an annual event called Hatsume which is a celebration of the first bud of Spring. This popular festival transforms the normally tranquil Morikami Park into a animated Japanese day.

Look for the 3 stages with taiko drummers, a Japanese tea ceremony, martial art demonstrations and  bonsai demonstrations.

SC: BBQ and Shag = Food and Dance

Hemingway, SC Exit 160 :  A BBQ Shag Festival is a celebration of food and dance held every spring in Hemingway, SC, which combines the famous  barbecue flavors of South Carolina with the official state dance, the Shag.

The 3-day fest features a whole hog barbecue cook-off as well as an antique car show for car buffs,  a beauty pageant, fireworks , arts and crafts and food vendors, amusement rides and local bands and talent.

If you like to party all night, on Friday and Saturday night the party is known to go on way past midnight, and is rumored to last til to 2 am.

GA: Shrimp Boat Blessings Parade and Festival

Darien, GA Exit 49: Visit Darien’s Waterfront Park for the 47th annual three-day Blessing of the Fleet Festival  celebrating their biggest industry – shrimping.

The festival features a weekend full of activities, including a classic car show and a juried art show that draws artistic talent from across the Southeast. Other fun-filled events: arts and crafts, a YMCA 5K, children’s activities, fireworks display,  street parade, Art In The Park, Children’s Fishing Rodeo, , various food and drink vendors and nightly live entertainment.

On Sunday a striking marine parade of shrimp trawlers commences at 2 pm. Each boat approaches the Darien Bridge to obtain a blessing for the coming year of fishing.

The commemoration is a celebration of food, family and fun, drawing a crowd of 30,000+ throughout the weekend.  Admission is $5 a day, children up to the age of 13 get in for free, Sunday is FREE to everyone. Coolers permitted for a fee of $10 apiece.

SC: Do You Have What it Takes? Marine-like Ultimate Challenge Mud Run

Gaston, SC  (I- 26- Exit 86B for 50 miles):   The Ultimate Challenge Mud Run is where teams slog their way through 6.2 miles of all-terrain course with 36 military obstacles that include mud holes, walls, trenches, and more that require swimming, crawling, climbing, jumping, and sheer determination.

The Leatherneck was designed by a former Marine drill instructor and built with the same materials and techniques as used in military training courses around the world. Teams will be challenged both mentally, and physically. Throughout history the most successful military units have been based on team work and not the individual, therefore this is a  2 or 4 person challenge.

There is a small entry fee for Spectators, with all proceeds going to charity. Children 13 and under are Free. Admission includes access to the Leatherneck course, Awards Ceremony and the Ultimate After Party with a DJ and vendors to explore.

SC: Metal Sculpture Competition with Auction of Winners

Florence, SC Exit 170: Florence-Darlington Technical College holds their 6th Annual Welding Sculpture Competition in conjunction with Francis Marion University Arts International Festival.

Teams of four artist-welders will compete against time and one another to create a full-scale metal sculpture from a large pile of donated steel scrap materials, using creative ingenuity and artistic aesthetics with provided welding tools.

There will be 10 booths; 5 professional teams, and 5 amateur teams and various prizes awarded: quality, individual and team.

All sculptures will be subject to a public auction, with the proceeds to benefit the FDTC Welding Student Scholarship Fund.

FL: Scuba-Diving Easter Bunny Hides Eggs off Florida Keys

Key Largo, FL : Each year a scuba-diving Easter bunny hides hard-boiled eggs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for an underwater Easter egg hunt.

The undersea Easter Egg Hunt, opened to divers and snorkelers visiting the Florida Keys who want participate,  is a fundraiser that helps Keys children in need throughout the year, and is staged by Keys dive operator Spencer Slate and his Captain Slate’s Scuba Adventures.

For this annual event Slates gets garbed in a giant bunny suit and dive gear to hide brightly colored eggs. Real eggs and nontoxic colorings are used to avoid any negative environmental impact.

Participants in this popular underwater game of hide and seek are awarded prizes, including a particularly valuable goodie basket for the fortunate finder of a “golden egg.”
