VA: Native American Dancing, Food, Art at the Cheroenhaka Powwow

Courtland, VA  Exit 11, Route 58: 17th Annual Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Inter-Tribal “Green Corn Dance” Powwow Gathering, relives the history, culture and traditions of the Iroquoian speaking Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indians of Southampton County VA with Chief Red Hawk.

In a maze of color, enjoy Native American dancing, drumming and singing  in the Native American Dance Regalia with special guest, the Aztec Dancers.

If you visit the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian history booth, you could learn to speak the Iroquoian Language, and have a chance to pore over native artifacts dating back to 10,000 BC.

You can meander through the vendors selling Native American arts and Crafts and jewelry. Enjoy the taste of native cuisine: Indian taco, fry bread, fish  and chips, corn soup and funnel cake.

Visit Cattashowrock Town, a 17th century replica Native American palisade village and walk the interpretative trails guided by signage both in the Iroquoian language and in English, identifying flora and fauna indigenous to the area.
