CT: Scale Replicas of Yachts Race at the Model Yacht Regatta

Mystic Seaport, CT Exit 90 : The sport of model racing is a growing rage in the northeast’s boating world. The J Class and the East Coast 12 Meter class will once again take to the water off Mystic Seaport’s North Dock for the astonishing Model Yacht Regatta.

The races feature radio-controlled (R/C) models from five to nearly nine feet long in an event hosted in partnership with the Mystic River Radio Sailors and sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).

The events kick off  with the J Class Region 1 Championships. These boats are 1/16 scale hull replicas of the full-size J class yachts that competed for the America’s Cup from 1930 through 1937.

The East Coast 12 Meter Class Region 1 Championships are expected to host 19 or more boats, that are scale replicas of the 12 Meter Columbia, which was the first 12 Meter in this class built in the USA.

The sport of model racing is a growing rage in the northeast’s boating world. So why not sail away,  it’s  quite routine for the skippers to offer spectators the opportunity to take the controls for a test sail.
