Canada: Sault Ste Marie, Ontario – Indian Fare at Rasoi

These are North Indian hot (both ways) appetizers served up in an adorable cart. I love it when you eat in a restaurant where you wind up with a collage of ethnic flavors which highlight Canada as a wonderful kaleidoscope of people. The butter chicken poutine says it all – east meets west in Sault Ste. Marie at Rasoi. In Hindi that name means kitchen, and the northern Indian fare here comes straight from home traditions.

Canada: Toronto, Ontario – Telephone in Casa Loma, Toronto

High tech telephones can be found in most of the rooms (even his bathroom) of Sir Henry Pellatt’s castle-like home, Casa Loma – and this was in 1913!

Canada: Toronto, Ontario – Ceiling Domes in Casa Loma

The home of Sir Henry Pellatt was one of the first in America to have recessed lighting installed in the domes of some rooms creating glowing ceilings.

The famous Oak Room of the splendid Edwardian era home of Sir Henry Pellatt. The finished panels fruit, flowers, ribbons and birds took 3 years to carve and were so exquisite that in 1913 when they arrived they were first exhibited in Montreal’s Musee des Beaux Arts before being installed in Casa Loma.

Austria, Salzburg: “Sound of Music” Fountain

.

The Residence Square, where you can find this baroque fountain, is the heart of the old city center of Salzburg, Austria. In the film, “The Sound of Music”, Maria (played by Julie Andrews) walked across the square singing “I Have Confidence” while on her way to the Trapp family home for the first time.

Residence Fountain at 15 metres high is the largest baroque fountain outside of Italy. It was built between 1658 and 1661, and enjoyed its 15 minutes of fame when Maria stopped there to splash water at the horses while singing “I Have Confidence”. The song was not from the original Broadway show but added for the film version. I would remember this as I saw the Broadway show 13 times as my Dad worked there.

France, Paris: Houseboats on the Seine

.

To us, finding people living on houseboats was surprising. It does seem though, like an inexpensive and fun way to live in Paris.
