FREE breakfast

Yes, there is a free lunch. However it is breakfast. Well if you’re clever about it, you can stretch it into a free lunch too. It is a terrific money-stretcher and time saver to have a meal waiting for you before you hit the road for the day.
In our six years the we have been writing Drive I-95, Exit by Exit Info, Maps, History and Trivia, we have stayed in almost every brand of motel on the I-95 exits, and the FREE breakfasts at first seemed to come out of the same commissary: bagels, cream cheese, jams, perhaps peanut butter, sliced bread, 3 kinds of cold cereal, packs of hot oatmeal and hot cocoa, apples, bananas, muffins, orange juice, coffee, cold French toast to be microwaved or a waffle-maker. Occasionally over the years, there has been a burst of excitement when we have come across hard boiled eggs, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage biscuits. We shouldn’t complain, because after all, this is all FREE, and it certainly is enough to get you started in the morning. Chains are moving towards more hot offerings – Hampton Inns was one of the first (and they even have a to-go bag if you’re on the run in the morning).
It is interesting to note, though, that when you stay in the higher priced hotels, you never get a FREE breakfast!
