MD: An Old Fashioned Holiday At The Surratt House

Clinton, MD Exit 7A: Why not bring Christmas past to Christmas present at The Surratt House’s Old Fashioned Holiday. Celebrate the Christmas of yesteryear amid period decorations, special exhibits and seasonal histories.

The Surratt House will be festively decorated in the style more appropriate for the mid-1800s with a tabletop tree, antique toys and dolls, and a special display of vintage  Victorian Christmas cards and ornaments.

Enjoy a relaxing historic tour amidst the chaos of the modern holidays. The house will be full of dressed docents, in garb of the period, and enhancing the regular tour with anecdotes of what Christmas would have been like for our ancestors of that period in Southern Maryland.

A booklet on Christmas history and customs will be given to each visitor as well as a 15% discount in the museum’s shop. This is the last time you can see the house decked with boughs of holly and other festive decorations before the museum closes for a month.

The museum will be closed to tours from December 10-January 15; however, the gift shop will remain open through December 22.

DE: A Brandywine Christmas; Yuletide at Winterthur

Yuletide at Winterthur embraces the warmth and festivity of the season with a magnificent holiday tour of Henry Francis du Pont’s mansion as well as breathtaking trees, dazzling room displays, a magical dollhouse, and featuring some 60 varieties of flowers.

The du Pont’s home will be decked out in holiday style with traditions from history and the du Pont family, displayed along with new inspirations from the outdoor Follies exhibition as well the Dining By Design indoor exhibition. You won’t want to miss the signature displays including the majestic  dried-flower  tree in  the Conservatory or the delightful 18-room dollhouse  mansion, filled with nearly 1,000 miniatures and fully decorated for Christmas in the Galleries and a display of antique Santas and figures of the mischievous Belsnickel, a gift giver from German folklore who is closely related to Ol’  Saint Nick.

Each delightful room on this year’s Yuletide Tour tells a story reflecting the ways in which Americans have celebrated the winter holiday season from the 1800s to the present.  Other decorations and displays reminiscence of H. F. du Pont’s family traditions during Christmas and New Year’s at Winterthur—including the family Christmas tree, glittering with glass     ornaments and fringed by baskets brimming with gifts, one for each family member.

Yuletide at Winterthur has something for everyone to enjoy.  Kids of all ages will delight in a magical Christmas experience at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.

GA: 36th Annual Kingsland Catfish Festival

Kindsland, GA Exit 3: Enjoy Kingsland, Georgia’s Annual Catfish Festival where you can down succulent Southern-fried catfish and all the fixings.

The fun begins Saturday, November 17 and includes a full day of entertainment. The festivities include a parade, arts and craft booths, mouth-watering, Southern-fried catfish with grits, hush puppies, coleslaw and sweet ice tea.

This must do event is FREE and open to the public and gives everyone a chance to fully immerse yourself in traditional and authentic Greek culture. Join in the celebration by eating, dancing, drinking and singing like a Greek.

A family friendly event, attendees will enjoy traditional, live Greek music, dancing, Greek beer, wine, ouzo and incredible selections of Greek cuisine, featuring favorite family recipes including gyros, fried calamari, pork souvlaki, moussaka, spanakopita and stuffed grape leaves.

Don’t forget the sweets: specialty prepared desserts include baklava, melomakarona (honey walnut cookies), semolina pudding and kourabiethes (almond shortbread cookies). Relax in the coffeehouse, enjoy a beer or glass of ouzo at the Taverna or sip wine at one of the riverfront tables.

FL- Thousands Enjoy the Prestigious 56th Annual Halifax Art Festival

Daytona Beach, FL Exit SR 92 International Speedway: Celebrating its 56th anniversary, the Halifax Art Festival is the 2nd oldest continual art festival in the state of Florida, and benefits the Museum of Arts & Sciences.

The Halifax Art Festival happens along the riverfront and palm-lined Beach Street and this year, approximately 45,000 visitors are expected to attend.  Art enthusiasts, students and families seeking a fun event flock to the fest to view the works of 250 + fine artists and craft artisans from all over the country.

The Festival features a unique blend of fine arts, crafts, music, food, and fun. Admission is free to the public with plenty of free parking. Offering live entertainment, a student art competition, children’s activities and fine dining in many local restaurants and cafes.

The Festival features two subdivisions:  the Competitive Fine Arts and Crafts category, which is juried and judged and eligible for prize money,  and the Non-Competitive Arts category, also juried but not eligible for awards. Artworks in both sections are all original. You can browse a wide variety of oil and watercolor artwork on the riverfront, as well as ceramics, basket weaving, jewelry, home goods, clothing and so much more.

Plus, there will be a Student Art Exhibit and Competition featuring some of the area’s most promising young artists from K-12th grade. As part of the award given to the students, the winning art will be displayed at Daytona Beach’s prestigious Museum of Arts & Sciences for one week. There’s an  children’s interactive art experience where children can create their own masterpieces under the “Little Van Gogh” tent while friends and family watch. All art supplies are FREE to each child.

Live music will be featured both Saturday and Sunday. Plenty of seating will be available in Riverfront Park to enjoy the music or a snack. International street cuisine and good old-fashioned festival food are available or have a bite at one of the many fine bistros and restaurants along Beach Street featuring Festival specials.

NH: Head to Mutt-ster Mash For a Howling Good Time

Hampton, NH Exit 2: Halloween is Going to the Dogs at the Smuttynose Brewery in Hampton, NH at  the Mutt-ster Mash event. This event is  Halloween-themed party catered to your four-legged friends (and their two-legged owners of course!)

FL: Soak up the Sun while Watching Sand Sculptures Come to Life

New Smyrna Beach, FL Exit 249: It’s time again sand sculptors, for New Smyrna Beach Sand Art Festival. Sand and water: These are the key elements in sand art, and something in no short supply in New Smyrna Beach. The scenery is picture perfect, soak up some sun and enjoy a beach with sand so fine, it squeaks when you walk on it. While on the beach why not put your creative skills to the test.

This year’s fall theme is “Classic Movie Monsters” and special events to create an exciting experience, with lots of activities surrounding exceptional sand sculptures.

Amateur teams will consist of families, friends, co-workers and community groups. All competitors will work their magic creating their own sand sculptures in 10′ X 10′ plots of cordoned beach. Prizes will be awarded for individual adult, child and team categories, judged by both professionals and local celebrity judges.

Sand art professionals will also create magnificent sculptures, showing off showing off their skills and one of the area’s most valued natural resources.

This is a free event, however spaces are limited. Walk-up registration available the day of the event until spaces are filled. All ages, all skill levels are welcome
