The Sky Tower in Auckland, NZ is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern hemisphere. It sits at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets and is 328 metres (1,076 ft) tall.

New Zealand: Auckland Domain – Auckland War Museum

In the stately columned Auckland War Museum, you can discover the world’s largest collection of Maori and Polynesian artifacts. Sitting impressively in the center is a large ornately carved Hotunui meetinghouse from 1878 and a Waka (war canoe), Te Toki-a-Tapiri from 1836. They’re heart and soul of the museum, yet there’s lots more.

New Zealand: Waitakere – Hotel Weta

Outside the Arataki Visitor Centre in Waitakere NZ, you can often see a local bug, the Weta in this hotel especially built for them. The second image is what they look like. Wetas are over 100 million years old (they knew the dinosaurs!) and haven’t changed much in all that time.

New Zealand: Waitakere – Entrance to Arataki Visitor Centre in Waitakere NZ

This impressive 11-metre high pou (post) stands outside the Arataki Visitor Centre as a guardian to the centre and Waitakere ranges. The whakairo (carvings) are carved from Kauri trees by Te Kawerau Maki, the local mana whenua (guardians of the land). The story it tells is of their ancestors.
