US: Seattle, WA – Hammering Man Statue in Seattle

About a dozen Hammering Man statues can be found around the world. This is the one we found in Seattle, WA. Jonathan Borofsky designed these huge kinetic sculptures as a silhouette a man who has a motorized arm and hammer. In each city they are different sizes but always painted black; They symbolize and celebrate workers all over the world.

What is pop culture without pop music? At MoPop in Seattle, this floor to ceiling column of guitars by Trimpin is called Roots and Branches and is made up of 700 instruments, 40 custom-made. It is computer controlled – self- playing Trimpin’s compositions.

On the back of Jimi Hendrix’s “Love or Confusion” lyrics, this drawing from early 1967 is believed to be by Hendrix and his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham. It depicts his Dylan-esque hair, military jacket, Iron Cross necklace, heeled boots and towering Marshall amplifier stack. It also references his manager, band members, and other groups like the Who and the Beatles.

US: Seattle, WA – Wizard of Oz Witch’s Hat

Here, from the Wizard of Oz is the Wicked Witch of the West’s hat. Margaret Hamilton, with her green face, scowl and cackle, was the actor who played her. Adrian Adolph Greenberg, Hollywood costume designer, created her signature outfit. As a little kid, watching that witch really scared me, sending me into tears. You can see the hat in person at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, WA. I didn’t cry when I saw it.
